Multi-material 3D printing is becoming more and more common in newer 3D printers, but there are still challenges in making multi-layered materials adhere properly. In a paper entitled “Enhanced Bonding of Immiscible Polymers via Intermixed Co-extrusion in Fused Deposition Modeling,” a pair of researchers describe a way to improve the bonding strength of different material parts in 3D printing.
As a result, researchers have developed a multi-material FDM 3D printing system, which requires only a nozzle to deposit multiple materials and constantly changes the composition during the printing process. They designed and built a custom three-extruder system with three inert channels.The system can be used for printing or does not require mixed printing, and thus can be used for both side-by-side co-extrusion and mixed co-extrusion.
The results show that as long as other parameters remain unchanged, the mechanical strength of the mixture will increase.Future work will include further mechanical testing and 3D printing of functional gradient materials.
