When will we see the Raspberry Pi 4?

Fans are eagerly awaiting the follow-up of the Raspberry Pi 3 B+, but how far is it?

The impact of Raspberry Pi on computing is undeniable. Microcomputers allow anyone to use credit card sized devices to build their own settings from scratch for $35, adding any sensors, ports and peripherals they want.

The Raspberry Pi was originally developed by a team of college students led by Eben Upton. Their overall mission is to develop a computer for curious children and to be passionate about creating their own computers.

Raspberry Pi 4 release date and availability

When the Raspberry Pi 3 was first introduced, creator Eben Upton told IT Pro that the device's shortest life could be three years, mainly because the company has reached the limit of 40nm manufacturing process. This means that the next major Pi update will not be realized until 2019.

As the Foundation effectively reaches the limits achievable with the 40nm manufacturing process, the new Raspberry Pi 4 is likely to be delayed. However, Upton did not give up and said: "We will eventually get there."

However, this did not prevent Upton and Co from releasing an updated version of Pi 3 two years later. With improved connectivity and faster clock speeds, the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ is a mid-term update that surprises everyone and proves to be a great complement to the Raspberry Pi series.

However, unfortunately, this does not mean that the Raspberry Pi 4 will appear soon. We have not heard of the potential successor to Pi 3 B +, so it seems that we will not see one until 2019 - or later. It is worth noting that although the performance of Pi 3 B + is better than its predecessor, this is largely due to the increased power efficiency, and the company is still welcoming the technical limits of 40nm manufacturing.

Raspberry Pi 4 Specifications and Features

In view of the problems faced by the development, there is still no news about the technical specifications that may appear in the Pi 4. Given the company's efforts to improve current 40nm performance, we are likely to see a shift to alternative manufacturing processes that provide more efficient silicon.

As for the features, the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ already includes excellent Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support, so we are unlikely to see any substantial network upgrades. Considering the team's focus on interoperability between Pi generations, you can also expect the form factor to remain the same.

The port is an area where we may see some real changes. For example, the Thunderbolt 3 compatible USB Type-C port can handle power, data and video transfers - which means that a USB-C port can do the work on the existing inputs on the Pi 3. They are also much smaller than the full-size USB Type-A port, giving the Pi 4 a slimmer form factor.

One of the main reasons why the original Raspberry Pi is so cheap is that it is designed to be affordable for parents whose children want to enter the computer. This mission statement remains at the heart of everything the Raspberry Pi Foundation does, so we don't want the price of the Raspberry Pi 4 to rise sharply. Creator Eben Upton has been very determined to keep the price as close as possible to $35.
